Jan Jones, Chief Executive Officer of California Hospice Network and Chief Executive Officer of The Elizabeth Hospice, was honored with the 2019 Pierre Salmon Award from the California Hospice and Palliative Care Association. This award recognizes individuals for their significant contributions in hospice and palliative care and for embodying the core values of hospice.
For more than four decades, Jan has been at the forefront of the hospice and palliative care movement and an active participant on the state and national levels of hospice organizations and in government arenas. As Chief Executive Officer of California Hospice, she oversees member organizations who are working, sharing and planning together to create stronger community hospices that deliver exceptional patient care and end-of-life services.
In her role as Chief Executive Officer of The Elizabeth Hospice, Jan oversees a workforce of 550 employees and active volunteers. She currently serves on the Board for the North San Diego Business Chamber and is President of the Escondido Rotary Club.
The award was named after Pierre Salmon, MD, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Long Island College of Medicine who served as a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in World War II. He participated in local, state and national committees for long-term care, aging and the accreditation of nursing homes. After leaving private practice in cardiology, he worked with the San Mateo County Department of Public Health and Welfare in various capacities for 20 years. Upon his retirement in 1988, the California State Hospice Association established the annual Pierre Salmon Award of Excellence. Dr. Salmon was the first recipient.
