Jan Jones took the helm of The Elizabeth Hospice as President and CEO on July 1, 2012. With over two decades of experience in the healthcare industry, Jan, a registered nurse, brings a strong background in management and the significant growth of successful community-based hospice programs and services.

Jan is a respected and recognized leader in the hospice and palliative care movement nationally. She currently serves as Vice Chair of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) Board of Directors and also serves on the Board for the National Hospice Foundation. As an active participant at the state and national levels of hospice organizations and government arenas, Jan is well-versed in hospice and healthcare industry trends and regulations. Locally, Jan is committed to supporting the communities where she lives and works and currently serves as a Board Member for the North San Diego Business Chamber.

In her role as President and CEO of The Elizabeth Hospice, Jan leads the oldest and largest nonprofit hospice and palliative care provider in San Diego County and the Inland Empire, with a workforce of more than 350 employees and 325 active volunteers. She is the liaison between the organization and the community and enjoys developing relationships with colleagues and residents throughout the region. With the Board, Staff, Volunteers, and the Community, Jan identifies unaddressed needs for those coping with serious illness and works toward solutions in meeting those needs.

Sarah McSpadden, COO

Sarah McSpadden, RN, MSN, MHA, CHC

Chief Operating Officer

Sarah McSpadden, RN, MSN, MHA, CHC joined The Elizabeth Hospice as Chief Operating Officer (COO) in August 2016. In her role, Sarah will have executive oversight of Operations including Medical and Clinical Services, Compliance, Quality Assurance, Education, Volunteers, Business Development, and Marketing and Communications. Sarah is a respected, seasoned healthcare executive with more than 23 years of progressively responsible experience in leading Home Health, Post-Acute Medical Care, Palliative Care and Hospice programs, with an emphasis on quality assurance, patient-care outcomes, and clinical operations.

Sarah’s multi-state and multi-office organization career highlights include executive leadership positions overseeing Clinical Services, Quality and Compliance, achieving Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP) Deemed Status Accreditation for eight hospice programs in three states, oversight of clinical-operations management and clinical-care delivery, development and supervision of clinical and end-of-life nursing education, and supervision of Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement programs and Compliance.

Sarah is a sought-out leader and active participant in hospice and regulatory compliance committees at the state and national levels. She serves as a member on the California Hospice and Palliative Care Association (CHAPCA) Education Committee, the national Quality and Standards Committee for the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), the Hospice & Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA), and is Certified in Healthcare Compliance by the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA).

Kip Skavinski

Chief Financial Officer and Director, Business Operations

Kip joined the Elizabeth Hospice in October of 2001, bringing over 25 years of executive and management experience including over 15 years in healthcare to the organization. He has worked in operations, business and financial analysis, budgeting and strategic planning. Kip also worked as a healthcare management consultant for a Big Five management consulting firm.

Kip holds a BS in physics and math and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.

Chief Philanthropy Officer

Jean Loo-Russo joined The Elizabeth Hospice in May 2016 as Chief Philanthropy Officer, overseeing the philanthropic efforts for the nonprofit organization including board relations, major gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, fundraising events and annual giving. Her extensive experiencing in fundraising and marketing includes work in both the healthcare and animal welfare sectors. Jean’s community involvement includes membership in the Association of Fundraising Professionals, North County Philanthropy, and Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary.

Andrea Goodwin

Interim Director of Human Resources

Andrea joined the Elizabeth Hospice in April 2005 as the Human Resources Director. In September 2011, Andrea was promoted to the Hospice’s Chief Operating Officer. In July 2016, Andrea announced that she will be leaving the organization to take advantage of the opportunity to spend more time with her family. Andrea has been an exceptional asset to The Elizabeth Hospice, leading the organization through dramatic industry change and growth. Because of Andrea, a strong foundation has been built here at the organization, to face the opportunities that lie ahead in the hospice and palliative care movement.

As the agency is still recruiting for a Human Resources Director, Andrea has graciously agreed to stay on as Interim Human Resources Director, due to her extensive experience as a human resources professional, until the position is filled.

Glenn-Panzer

Glenn Panzer, MD

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Glenn Panzer is Chief Medical Officer of The Elizabeth Hospice. He has been affiliated with The Elizabeth Hospice for over 11 years. He was Medical Director for 3 years prior to being given the title of Chief Medical Officer. He guides a team of 10 physicians and 6 nurse practitioners, 8 of which are board certified in hospice and palliative medicine.

Dr. Panzer prides himself as being a Certified Medical Director through the American Medical Director’s Association. As medical director and now as Chief Medical Officer he helps promote the quality of care. Dr. Panzer is a Board certified Family Physician with added qualifications in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine by the American Board of Medical Specialties. He also is a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Practice.

Dr. Panzer presently is working with Palomar Health to develop their palliative care program. He serves as chair of the ethics committee of Palomar Health. He is a graduate of the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at The Wyoming Valley Family Practice Residency Program in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania where he practiced for over 20 years. Dr. Panzer moved to San Diego with his wife Lori in 2003.

Melissa DelaCalzada, Director

Melissa DelaCalzada

Director, Communications, Volunteers, and Education

Melissa joined The Elizabeth Hospice in June 2014 and is responsible for the operational and strategic management of the Volunteer and Education Departments, as well as all marketing and communications initiatives for the organization. She is an accomplished, results-driven communications and fund raising professional, with nearly 20 years progressive experience in the nonprofit sector and health care industry. Her work in conceptualizing and orchestrating marketing communications and fund raising campaigns has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades. Melissa has a proven track record in effective media relations and community outreach to diverse communities. She is a highly rated and requested speaker on areas of communications, public relations, hospice and palliative care, caregiver outreach, and social media.

Melissa is a member of the Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development (SHSMD) of the American Hospital Association, the local and national chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), National Council of Hospice and Palliative Professionals (NCHPP) and its Development/PR/Marketing Steering Committee, and the International Association of Business Communicators, San Diego Chapter. She serves on various chamber committees and is a member of the Programs and Services Committee for St. Paul’s Senior Services.

Robert Burgett

Director, Information Technology

Robert joined the Elizabeth Hospice team in July of 2005. He brings over 20 years of managerial experience in Information Technology and a working knowledge of systems development, support, as well as experience in long-range planning and structured project management. Robert co-founded three companies from 1994 to present; PCSUSA, Lancorp and L7 Technology, serving over 50 local Southern California organizations and their technology needs.

Due to his extensive technical training, education and experience, Robert is able to facilitate and communicate how software technology can best be implemented in a company’s existing systems in order to serve the goals of: continued growth, increased profitability and efficiency, effective business functions and processes.

Robert holds several technical certifications and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business with a concentration in Information Systems.

Kunze

Phaedra Kunze

Director, Business Development

Phaedra joined The Elizabeth Hospice in 2001 as the Contract Manager and was promoted to Director of Business Development in January of 2010. Since that time she has implemented new, innovative programs to meet the rapidly increasing number of patients and families in need of hospice. This effort, in part, resulted in a 71% increase in the number of patients served by The Elizabeth Hospice since the department was formed in 2009. With over 19 years in the health care arena, Phaedra brings nine years of managed care experience and eight years of teaching experience as an adjunct faculty member at the University of San Diego and San Diego State University. She developed curriculum for the Customer First Training program and is passionate about empowering staff to achieve service excellence every day.

Phaedra holds a Master’s degree in Communication Studies from San Diego State University and received certification in Non-Profit Management from Chapman University in 2011.

Liz Sumner RN, BSN, MA ORGL

Director, Clinical Services and Center for Compassionate Care

Liz Sumner RN, BSN, MA ORGL is the Director of Clinical Services and the Center for Compassionate Care of The Elizabeth Hospice. She is recognized as a pioneering leader of pediatric and perinatal palliative care, and her programs have received the NHPCO’S “Heart of Hospice” award; the American Hospital Association’s Circle of Life; recognition from the AACN for her dedication to end-of-life nursing education.

Liz is an accomplished author and national lecturer. She represents The Elizabeth Hospice on multiple state and national councils including: The Pediatric Leadership Council & Education Committee of National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization; Compassionate Passages Board member; and Ethics committee for the Palomar Pomerado Health System. She is certified as an RTS Perinatal bereavement coordinator. Liz created and managed the regional Children’s Program of San Diego Hospice and Palliative for over 18 years, which became a nationally acclaimed model for pediatric hospice care. She was appointed to the prestigious Institute of Medicine Committee of the National Academy of Sciences that published the landmark report in 2002, “When Children Die: Improving Palliative and End of Life Care for children and their families.”

Liz received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Marquette University and graduated in May 2012 with her master’s degree in organizational leadership through Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, with a certificate in servant leadership.
